🐾 Checkers vs. The Squirrel Mafia

When Peaceful Camping Turns into a Turf War

There’s something magical about a crisp morning at the campground — the rhythmic puff and hiss of the coffee percolator, the sound of loons echoing across the lake, and the quiet rustle of leaves overhead.

At least, that’s how it should be.

Instead, our peaceful morning symphony was replaced by a sound best described as “squirrel chaos meets canine outrage.” The tranquility shattered when Checkers — our curly-haired, grey-and-white guardian of the trailer — discovered that the local squirrel mafia had taken over our campsite.

And from that moment, war was declared.

🦴 Meet Checkers: Defender of the Realm

If you’ve never met Checkers, imagine a dog with the heart of a lion, the curls of a poodle, and the attitude of a bouncer at a biker bar.

He takes squirrel defense very seriously. At home, he’ll stand at the patio door like a revved-up race car, glaring down any rodent that dares to cross into his territory. He bears no love for the lot of them, yet he reserves his true wrath for the grey squirrels. And when we go camping, that rivalry reaches new, cinematic levels.

“Chief of Campground Security” isn’t just a title — it’s a lifestyle.

Every rustle, chipmunk, or suspicious pinecone is treated as a potential threat. To him, the campground isn’t a place for snacks and naps — it’s a high-stakes security zone.

While other campers enjoyed morning strolls and pancake breakfasts, Checkers was busy establishing dominance — one suspicious sniff at a time.

Unfortunately, this particular campground came with an organized crime problem: the squirrels.

🌰 The First Encounter

It started innocently enough.  It was a cool Saturday morning at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary, one of our favorite campgrounds. I was sipping coffee at the picnic table, basking in the perfect morning calm, when Checkers froze. His ears perked, tail straightened, and his gaze locked on a tree across the site.

There, sitting smugly near the base, was a plump grey squirrel. He held a pinecone like a cigar, staring over with the confidence of someone who owned the joint.

I swear he smirked.

Checkers let out a single bark — the kind that says, “You’ve been warned.”

The squirrel, in classic mob fashion, ignored him. He flicked his tail — the squirrel equivalent of flipping someone off — and chirped back.

That was it. The line had been crossed.

Coffee airborne. Dog in full pursuit.

Camping peace: officially over.

Checkers launched himself forward. The leash went taut, my coffee went airborne, and I nearly did a backflip over my chair. Meg, of course, was laughing so hard she almost spilled her own coffee (almost — she has priorities).

🏃 The Great Chase of Site #5

The next five minutes looked like a nature documentary filmed by a drunk cameraman. Checkers zigzagged across the campsite, barking orders like a drill sergeant while the squirrel darted up the tree, taunting him from above.

Every time Checkers thought he had him, the squirrel flicked his tail as if saying, “Na na, can’t catch me!” It was like watching Mission: Impossible — if Tom Cruise had fur and poor depth perception.

I tried reasoning with him.

“Checkers! Leave it! He’s just a squirrel!”

But my words were useless. He was locked in, laser-focused, and convinced this was his life’s purpose.

Then came the reinforcements. Two more squirrels appeared, chittering in what I can only assume was code:

“Distract the human, take the nuts, send the rookie in from behind.”

This wasn’t a random encounter — it was a coordinated operation.

Meg’s Play-by-Play Commentary

Meg, ever the supportive partner, decided this was too good not to narrate.

“Looks like Checkers is advancing on enemy territory. Squirrel No. 1 has him distracted. This could get ugly.”

Her commentary only fueled him. Checkers puffed himself up even more, vibrating with purpose. Dylan joined in like a little field reporter:

“He’s cornered one behind the brush pile, Dad! Oh wait—nope. It escaped. They’re regrouping!”

The squirrels had the high ground. Checkers had heart. I had a headache.

💥 Collateral Damage (and Coffee)

In his relentless pursuit of justice, Checkers managed to wrap his leash around the picnic table, his water bowl, and my chair — in that order.

By the time I untangled the chaos, the campsite looked like a crime scene.

My coffee was everywhere (including my pants), my dignity was gone, and Checkers stood proudly under the trees barking, “Justice will be served!”

One of the squirrels turned its back, tail up — a final insult that said it all.

I laughed. Meg laughed harder. Checkers, however, took it personally.

It’s then when we spotted a problem: a suspicious little hole in the ground, positioned just outside the maximum extension of Checkers’ leash—as if placed there by design. All day long, squirrels zipped in and out of it like furry commandos entering their subterranean HQ. It didn’t take long to realize this wasn’t just a hole… it was the Squirrel Mafia’s primary base of operations.

🌙 Round Two: The Night Shift

Later that evening, we figured the excitement was over. We roasted marshmallows, played cards, and relaxed by the fire.

But Checkers hadn’t forgotten.

As darkness fell, the forest came alive — rustling leaves, distant owls… and the faint chitter of squirrels plotting revenge.

At exactly 8:17 p.m., Checkers launched Round Two.

A riot of barking and scrabbling erupted. The leash rattled like a snake, the trailer shuddered, and high above, the squirrels executed a synchronized rendition of “Can’t Touch This.”

Meg, recognizing the brilliance of their mockery, dubbed them “The Butt-Wiggle Battalion.”

Even after it ended, Checkers refused to sleep. Every shadow was a threat. Every rustle was a potential ambush.

Nocturnal squirrel warfare is not for the faint of hear

Finally we retired for the night to the inside of the trailer where Checkers collapsed into full doggie snoring mode right in the middle of our bed.

🌅 The Morning After

When morning came, Checkers was still exhausted but victorious. He strutted around the site like a general returning from battle, tail held high, chest puffed out.

The squirrels were silent. Whether they’d retreated or were simply regrouping, I couldn’t say.

Meg handed me my coffee with a grin.

“Looks like Checkers secured the perimeter.”

“Yep,” I said. “Peace is restored… until next time.”

Checkers flopped down in the sun, looking every bit the hero.

And honestly? I think he believed he was.

🪵 Lessons from the Squirrel Frontlines

Looking back, there were some key takeaways from our weekend of woodland warfare:

  • 🐿️ Never underestimate a squirrel’s intelligence (or their throwing accuracy).
  • ☕ A tired dog is a happy dog — and an even happier owner.
  • 🔄 Always secure your coffee before engaging in combat support maneuvers.
  • 🎙️ Meg missed her calling as a sports commentator.
  • 👀 Squirrel grudges are real. I’m fairly sure we’re on a watchlist now.

🔥 Reflections by the Campfire

That night, as we sat by the fire, Checkers snored peacefully beside us — tail twitching, probably dreaming of victory and endless fields of fleeing squirrels.

And I couldn’t help but smile. Because this — the chaos, the laughter, the unexpected — this is camping.

It’s not just about sunsets and serenity.

It’s about stories that make you laugh until your sides hurt.

So here’s to Checkers — fearless defender of campsites, protector of snacks, and scourge of the squirrel mafia.

Until next time, the war continues.

🧠 Lessons Learned (a.k.a. The Squirrel Survival Guide)

  • Secure your nuts. (Both the edible kind and your sanity.)
  • Keep your coffee out of the splash zone.
  • Don’t underestimate a 65-pound dog’s sense of duty — or their ability to move a picnic table.
  • Family laughter is the best sound in the woods.
  • And always, always respect the squirrels.

🐕 Wrapping It Up: Share Your “Paw-some” Tales

As we packed up the next morning, Checkers did one last perimeter check — just to remind the squirrels who was boss. He gave a single bark toward the trees, tail wagging proudly.

And somewhere in the distance, I swear I heard a faint chittering laugh.

If you’ve got a furry camping sidekick with a flair for drama (or just a knack for chaos), I’d love to hear your stories.

Drop them in the comments below — bonus points for tales involving squirrels, snacks, or heroic dogs who take their jobs way too seriously.

Until next time: keep your coffee hot, your marshmallows unburnt, and your squirrels at a safe distance

Take only pictures, leave only footprints — and maybe a little of your dignity when you trip over a tent peg.

  1. Hi Dave,

Loved, Checkers vs. The Squirrel Mafia, the humour, the colourful descriptions of Checker’s imagined belief he is head of camp security, as well, the squirrel’s enemie/mafia personality! All this combined with your photography makes a very entertaining story.
